Controlled Observation Sessions
A Controlled Observation Session (COS) is a structured, instrumented sitting in which a small group of qualified observers is present in a controlled environment while an apparatus of interest is monitored. Sessions are conducted under protocol, in the presence of a facilitating observer, and are recorded in full.
Protocol (Summary)
- The room is designated clean. Wireless devices are excluded for the duration of the session, as a precaution against interference with instrumentation.
- Observers are seated. Observers remain seated.
- Ambient lighting is reduced to the minimum required for note-taking. The reduction is necessary for instrument sensitivity and is not intended to affect mood.
- A facilitating observer, whose role is to allow the agency of the object to be present, directs the session and takes no position on its outcome.
- Communication with the apparatus is conducted through several independent channels. Output, if any, is not interpreted during the session.
- The session concludes when the facilitating observer states that it has concluded.
